One thing that The Hammer really solidified to me was the vast distinction between someone who classifies themselves as lower case deaf and someone who is upper case Deaf. I think that it could easily be argued that the main focus of the movie is Matts transition from a person who sees himself as a talented disabled person to a talented person.
