Although I still have not been able to fully satisfy my curiosity it is my understanding that Michael Shaara died a rather untimely death and his son Jeff picked up the family legacy of writing. The last 100 pages or so are far superior to the first 100 so dont give up in the early going. The text is fine but the early chapters seem like the characters are pontificating some of them are and the writing can be a little wooden. The album is filled with the horrific life facts of death evil and bloodshed brutality.
What better way is there to portray such morbid truths by the use of heavy metal. It would be great to see any of these songs performed live. Turn the volume up all the way rock out and enjoy The Killer Angels by Civil War.

Lesser bands might be content letting their superstar vocalist carry all of the load but such an approach would not yield the spectacular results heard within.
